Acronyms

I've just noticed something really strange about my acronym usage whilst sending a text message. I've been annoyed with my iPhone for a while now, because it autocorrects 'atm' (at the moment) to 'ATM' (Automated Teller Machine). This is all very well and good, but I've only just noticed I always capitalise IIRC. As such, I believe a poll is required to see whether I am alone – for the purposes of the poll, I have capitalised them all, but don't let that put you off!

During searching for a handy reference point I found Fox's article entitled 'Top 50 Text Acronyms Parents Should Know', which is brilliant, but which they may have ripped off from somewhere else.

ETA: If you're going to suggest acronyms please would you tell me what they mean? I have no idea what some of the suggestions stand for!

This is a story about a family with an autistic son who recently lost their home in a fire, via [livejournal.com profile] brithistorian.

This is why there is a tendency for young people not to really have a great deal of respect for people over the age of about 21. When 54% of the people older than you are quoted as saying you act no better than an animal, why keep trusting the people older than you?

I'd had one of the best days ever today, and now I'm upset. Geoffrey Perkins, the producer of the radio series of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and the creator of Mornington Crescent, died in a car crash today aged 55.

May he always Know Where His Towel Is.

ISS Virus

OK, so, following from this entry, I have a question: if a computer virus made its way onto the ISS, and did something crazy that killed the crew (God forbid), would the virus' creator be guilty of manslaughter? Would the astronaut that took the virus up on a memory stick be guilty of manslaughter? What would be the legal situation?

Bush pledges $48bn for AIDS support in Africa, drops requirement for 33% to be spent on promoting abstinence. I don't approve of everything Bush did (!) but hey, you take good news where you find it!

Virgin Media in 'we have too many customers, we are trying to get rid of some' shocker. Of course, next year, I am with O2 broadband, who deliver 8Mbps to our house for £12.50 a month (you have to pay an extra fiver for a static IP address, but £12.50 a month works out at about £2.08/month per person in the house, so it's no biggie...).

New Coins

I actually missed this, and I'm unsure how I managed it - it must have been reported somewhere, but my flist didn't link to it and I didn't see it on the BBC... At any rate, the new designs for the UK's coins have been announced, and I just wondered what people thought!

R2-D2

If you have even the slightest bit of Star Wars love in you, this is a must-see. It's an R2-D2 DVD projector, and whilst I know that's cool on its own, just watch the video. Trust me.

Vatican Says Aliens Could Exist. Also, towards the end of the article, "The Vatican is organising a conference next year to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the author of the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin." Cool! ETA: Although the BBC article mentions 'life on Mars' no other articles on this have any mention of the red planet and I suspect this is due to the Beeb sensationalising the story to get people more interested. Yay for journalists misrepresenting stories to pull in the readers.

Humphrey Lyttelton has died. Currently, the BBC Radio 4 page is displaying only his image, and a link to that page - I think that's a nice touch for someone who presented I'm Sorry, I Haven't A Clue for so long. I am glad I got to see him present the show before this happened.

Fire

johncoxon: (Sports Day)
The King's School, Peterborough - the school which I had the privilege of attending for the last seven years - was attacked by arsonists in the early hours of Wednesday morning. A Biology room was hit in the science block - two windows smashed, more damaged. There was CCTV above the room and only minor damage (smoke damage etc) to the contents of the room, thankfully. The BBC reported on the fire, as did the local newspaper. I heard about it from a friend at work who was at a party near the school on the night it happened. [BBC, The Evening Telegraph]

Friday!

Jun. 22nd, 2007 01:08 pm
johncoxon: (Beach)
So, today, I woke up at 12:30 and I'm going to the pub at 18:00. This leaves me with five and a half hours to go into school to hand in my locker key and pay for the book I lost before going into town to try to hire something for the leavers' dinner. I am undecided as to whether I should buy any comics - the answer is probably no, as I am poor and need to afford a train ticket to Norwich tomorrow (YAY NORWICH, btw). Life, it would seem, is good at the moment.

Also, on the latest LJ secret, people have made comments to me like, "I adore your icon," "Let's bone," and, "I must proclaim my love for you because you have both Zelda and Heroes icons, which is truly awesome." [livejournal.com profile] ljsecret can rock sometimes. Although being told by some abstinence teenager that guys were always hornier than girls and I knew nothing about sex made me lol, because, y'know, she can fuck off and go read a book or something. On that subject, in this case, her father may be a pastor but he can take me out of what he labelled as 'all Christians' - I don't think she should be allowed to wear that ring. So bite me. [BBC]

Hope you're all having a good Friday, chaps! :)

Also, I forgot how much I love this icon!
