The night before last night saw an excellent meal at Harry Ramsden's, which was only improved by our South African waiter (we immediately deduced he wasn't Australian, he was smiling) and a family next to us featuring a stepdad who played everyone in the family off each other all night, castigated his girlfriend's children fir being rude before taking a phonecall and was generally a complete c--t.

Yesterday, we went to a place called the Blue Pool which is a very pretty place to walk around, and at which we also successfully ate a cream tea. This was the prelude to a lazy evening, in which we ate omelette and (finally!) got to go to the pub! There were ten ales available for us to sample:

Davenports: Heatwave - smooth with bitter aftertaste. AN.
Hopback Brewery: Summer Lightning - bitter golden ale, barley, gets better as you drink, dry aftertaste. SO.
Vince Minty: Stronginthearm - smooth and hoppy. SO/AN.
Wadworth: 6X - session bitter, nutty throughout. AN.
Wadworth: Bishop's Tipple - golden ale, with a citrus taste and crisp finish. SO.
Wadworth: Henry's IPA - smooth but with citrus hints. AN.
Wadworth: Horizon - crisp with a citrus hint throughout. AN.
Wadworth: JCB - slightly bitter initially with a fruity taste. AN.
Wyre Piddle Brewery: Piddle Express - sweet, almost caramel, throughout. AN.
Young's: Kew Gold - clean bitter taste with a slightly nutty aftertaste. AN.

We are now gearing up for breakfast at a local JDW, catch you all later!

Pleased to read that Harry Ramsdens has improved since the last time I went there, which was to the original, in Yeadon (where I lived at the time) As a restaurant it was okay in a 'I really want to be Betty's when I grow up' sort of way (the staff definitely did NOT approve of us ex-student types) As a fish and chip shop, it wasn't the best one in the village. Something to do with it not frying in dripping. I can feel my arteries constricting at the memory!

Stick to the 6X. You can't go wrong.

It's a famous fish and chips shop, what's wrong with eating there?!

They are kind of the 'Starbucks' of fish and chips.

Indeed.

On top of which, this:

http://web.archive.org/web/20050311065035/http://www.jacksfishandchips.co.uk/

is my family's business, courtesy of the wayback machine - my Dad's now retired, and my brother is gently backing out of the business, so although there are still innumerable Jack's shops around our neck of the woods, and more under different names that the two of them have been involved with over the years, there's not so much coordinated central stuff going on, hence no coherent Jack's website any more.

A remarkable number of my aunts, uncles, cousins, etc, are in the chip trade, too. So I tend to frown upon people eating at Harry Ramsden's! ;)
